Walking:
Be sure you and
your child are familiar with his/her route to school. Consider the
best intersections for crossing busy streets. Encourage your child
to use the sidewalk, and consider having a walking partner. If you
come across safety hazards along your child’s walking route, contact
the Oakland Pedestrian Safety Project at 238-7049.
or
Biking:
Be familiar
with your child’s bicycling route, and ensure your child follows
safety precautions. These include the use of a helmet, being
cautious at intersections, and being aware of other traffic. The
bike cage continues to provide a secure place for students to park
bicycles during the school day. To use the cage, students must
demonstrate knowledge of safe biking practice and identify a safe
route to school. The cage is open at the beginning and end of the
school day only; bicycles may not be out on campus during school
hours. Please use a bicycle lock at all times.

There is a great
deal of traffic congestion on
Coolidge Avenue
at drop-off and pick-up times. To help keep students safe, please:
Consider alternate forms of transit.
·
AC Transit has a bus line that
runs along MacArthur Blvd. Students are eligible for reduced fares.
Call AC Transit for more details.
·
Have your child walk to school. Did you know that 20%
of traffic in mornings is parents driving kids to school? Walking
improves neighborhoods and improves overall health.
·
Have your child ride a bike to school. Your child can
earn a bike through the bike club. Also, a bike cage offers a safe
place to lock up your child’s bike during the school day.
·
Concerned about your child's safety
while getting to school? Join your child on a walk or bicycle
ride. According to the researchers at Cincinnati Children's Hospital
Medical
Center, almost 83 percent of all trips are quick, close to home and
not work-related, making them good candidates for walking or
cycling.
Bring your child to school a bit earlier.
Drop
off your child at some specific point near the campus, and then meet
him/her at the same spot after school.
Be
aware that at the end of the day it takes time for students to leave
their classrooms, say goodbye to friends, and then get out to your
car. There is no need to arrive at school earlier than necessary.
