The Bret Harte High girls volleyball team took a big step towards its first Mother Lode League championship since 1988 with a five-set victory at Summerville Tuesday night.

In Tuolumne, team captain Kylie Kester had a season-high 27 kills and Bret Harte rallied for an 18-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 16-14 victory.

“Kylie really put a hurt on their defense,” Bret Harte coach Richard Juarez said.

A junior outside hitter, Kester bested her previous high for kills in a match by 10 and also had three blocks and an ace in the win, serving 20 for 22.

The victory increased Bret Harte’s lead in the Mother Lode League to two games over Summerville, which dropped into a second-place tie with Calaveras. Heading into a rivalry showdown with the Redskins Thursday night in San Andreas, Bret Harte (14-8, 8-1 MLL) had six games remaining in league play.

Sammie Artiaga was another key in Bret Harte’s victory at Summerville with 14 digs. She also led the Bullfrogs’ in serve-receive and served 20 for 20 with an ace.

Also for the Bullfrogs, Brie Preston had 19 kills and four blocks; Cassidy Davis had four blocks; and Brittany Schulte had 51 assists.

Bret Harte lost Tuesday’s JV match and won the frosh match.

This weekend concludes The Green Team’s shoe drive at Bret Harte! Please bring your shoes to the school anytime during school hours, OR this Saturday April 30th, during our Community Work Day from 9-12 a.m.

We will sort shoes for donation to an emergency relief organization, and recycling to be used for play fields.

The PTA is asking for donations to help pay for shipping, which is underwritten by a minigrant by the Bret Harte PTA. $1 per pair is requested. Drivers are also needed to take boxes of recycled BOOKS to www.booksforthebarrios.com in Concord.

Calaveras Drops a 6-5 Decision to Bret Harte

Bret Harte took control of the game early, scoring once in the first, three in the second and one more in the fourth building up a 5-1 lead. Chris Ussery was the only Redskin clicking on offense in the first 3 innings, scoring a pair of runs to go along with a double in the first and a homerun in the 3rd.

A late comeback bid by the Calaveras Redskins came up just a bit short this afternoon at the Ballpark in San Andreas as Calaveras dropped a heartbreaking 6-5 decision to Bret Harte. After falling behind 5-1 early in the game, Calaveras battled back and had the tying and go ahead runs on base when the game ended…..

After a rough start, Stewart Zabel settled down and held Bret Harte at 5 runs for three frames allowing the Redskins the opportunity to make a run at Bret Harte. In the fifth, Calaveras cut the lead to 2 runs. Ussery singled with one out. Garrett Bock doubled to left center scoring Ussery. Calaveras threatened in the 6th, loading the bases before Bret Harte escaped with no damage.

Bret Hart scored a run in the top of the 7th on a mishandled ground ball to extend their lead to 6-3. This would turn out to be a very big run. The Redskins would not go quietly. A single by Thomas Douglas, an error and a ground out put runners on second and third. Donovan Vassey had an infield single that scored Douglas, and Arledge came around to score when the throw to first got away. Vassey the tying run was on second base with 1 out. Tyler Gillis was drilled by a pitch to put the go ahead run on first base with one out. A strikeout and a groundout would end the threat and the Redskins missed a great opportunity to separate themselves from the pack.

Ussery led the Calaveras at the plate with 3 hits, including a double and home run. Ussery reached base four times. Boch had a pair of doubles and an RBI. Vassey had a pair of hits.

The loss drops Calaveras’ record to 6-3 in MLL action, Bret Harte improved to 5-4 and remains alive in the MLL race.

Calaveras travels to Stagg High School on friday evening for a 6 pm game.

The Calaveras Arts Council celebrates its 30th anniversary as a nonprofit arts agency and is bringing to Angels Camp’s Bret Harte Theater Boyz Nite Out, a five member pop a-capella ensemble to help celebrate this milestone and to entertain you. Help make this a joyous celebration and come to see the “BNO”. For over 15 years, Boyz Nite Out has rocked thousands with their high-energy thumpin’ “pop/rock a cappella” — featuring tight-locked harmonies, phat vocal bass, bumpin’ vocal percussion, and incredible songs. They make music like no other by using their vocal skills to sound the drum, synthesize the sound, sing the songs, and to electrify audiences of all ages. They combine all vocal drums, guitars, and horns with smooth five-part harmony to make you think there’s an entire band on stage. They have traveled the world entertaining and amazing audiences by singing songs and playing the music of Spencer Davis Group’s “Gimme Some Lovin’,” “Fire” and “Come Go With Me”, the Doors’ “People are Strange” and to performing remarkable vocal percussion on Lennon/McCartney’s “Come Together”. That’s not all. BNO sing “Brown Eyed Girl”, “Footloose,” and the Righteous Bro’s “The Still of the Night”. And those are just for starters. The hits just keep on coming.

BNO are Bill Craig, tenor and the swingman; Bud Anderson, tenor and the sound synthesizer; Mark Baldi, baritone and singer/middleman; John Moore, bass/horn and the groovemaster; and Eugene Rocha, vocal percussion and human drum. They have shared the stage with singer songwriter Michael McDonald, the famous Ray Charles, Country recording artist, Kevin Sharp and more.

The Calaveras Arts Council is honored to bring to and expand art awareness and appreciation in Calaveras County. Its mission is to support, nourish, and awaken the arts in the community. Its purpose is to network with arts-related organizations and individuals, schools, and businesses to provide a cultural vitality in the area.
