The Goals of the Bret Harte PTA are:

  • To promote family involvement at our school
  • To enhance communication between the school and families and teachers
  • To support the teachers and staff who work without children
To advocate for the needs of our school with the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD)

Imagine! Together, the parents and guardians in Oakland who enroll their children in public schools have the power to make Oakland’s public schools great. The Bret Harte Parent Teacher Association provides you an outlet to exercise this power. The Bret Harte PTA is a partnership between parents, guardians, teachers and staff. Together, we are committed to improving education for all students.   Bret Harte’s PTA focuses on

·        Community Building and Cooperation - This year, we are holding two joint meetings with the School Site Council. Both meetings will be potluck meetings, and both will provide translation services and child care. Please see the calendar for dates.

·        Family Involvement - We will sponsor two breakfasts this year for parents/guardians and teachers to attend. We will also sponsor two work days for families to help clean up and beautify the campus and work on special projects. Parent Patrol is based on a model program at Oakland Technical High School and provides additional adult presence before and after school and during lunch.

·        Communication between school and family - We create and sponsor the parent handbook, pay for the publication of the monthly newsletter, and maintain the school’s website. We also produce a calendar which is available as a magnet. The calendar magnet is provided to all PTA members free of charge. The magnet is available to non-PTA members for a nominal charge.

·       Support for the principal and administration - We meet with Ms. Williams regularly and provide volunteer assistance and financial support for special programs, like lunch clubs.

·        Advancing teachers' objectives - We provide mini-grants to teachers to pay for classroom supplies and individual needs. Last year, the PTA also sponsored the Yosemite Leadership Program.

·        Advocating for the needs of middle school students at the district level - We are currently working with other middle school PTA’s, recognizing the unique challenges that middle schools in Oakland are facing.

·        Marketing and Promotion -  The PTA recognizes that Bret Harte offers a unique program: It is one of the few remaining comprehensive middle schools in Oakland. We also realize the need to market the school to maintain enrollment and preserve and develop programs. This year, we are also offering a limited number of cloth shopping bags for sale to promote Oakland’s public schools.

Parent and guardian involvement helps kids get a good education. There are lots of ways to put action behind the concerns we voice. We invite you to improve the safety, cleanliness and community spirit of our school. The teachers and administrators appreciate our efforts. Imagine!

Meetings are held the second Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. in Room 100 and are open to everyone (whether or not you have joined PTA). You will meet other parents, grandparents, guardians, teachers, and community members who are lending a hand. You can ask questions of fellow parents. You'll be informed, and you'll make a difference in your child's education.

Suggested PTA membership dues are $10 with any amount welcome.  Membership forms are available in the office, at PTA meetings, in the monthly newsletter or online. Send your dues by mail, have your student drop them off at the front office!  Download the form
